“Wow. Boys are jerks, aren’t they?”

Fey was startled from her tears by the sound of a voice behind her. She gasped and whirled about, shoving several of her books closed as she turned to see who it was. In the dim firelight of a nearby torch, she could make out the face of the same girl who had run into Wit earlier that day. Fey almost didn’t recognize her; she looked very different from how she’d appeared before. Her braided hair was now down to her waist (though it still wasn’t as long as Fey’s), and she wore a set of delicate red robes about her shoulders. Her grey eyes peered down at Fey like two steel orbs, glinting behind a set of feathery eyelashes.

Fey scrubbed her face clean with the back of her sleeve. “Wh–who are you?”

The girl placed a hand over her sternum. “Who, me? Doesn’t matter. I’m a patron, like you.” Her eyes darted in the direction of the staircase Wit had climbed. “Boys. They just don’t get girls. We’re delicate creatures, you know? Yelling at you like that, completely disregarding the other people trying to sleep in this city.” She made a clucking sound, snapping her tongue against the roof of her mouth. “Ruffians like that should be thrown out.”

“Oh, please don’t!” Fey exclaimed, splaying her fingers on the ground as she knelt forward. “We didn’t mean any trouble, really!”

The girl raised the back of her hand to her mouth as she giggled. “You silly thing. You’re not in trouble! It’s that boy who should get a switch to his back. I mean, you can’t just pretend that didn’t happen, right?”

Fey felt tears prick her eyes again, and she rubbed at her nose. “I…It’s my fault,” she whispered. I’ve never seen him get angry before, she thought to herself. Certainly not at her, he hadn’t before. Did he really think of her as just a burden? It was true that he hadn’t planned on bringing her along from Depthimont. The memory of her conversation with him after Steeple Island made her feel ill inside.

The girl placed her hands on her hips. “Well, now you know not to confide in him, right? He’ll just yell at you again and make you cry. That’s no fun, is it?”

Fey blinked until she could see again. “No,” she admitted. None of this had been fun.

“Say,” the girl snapped her fingers. “Why don’t you come over to my place? No one would yell at you there, and you could read all the books you want!”

“But…” Fey stared up at her, surprised at the unexpected invitation. “Didn’t you get in trouble with the guards, earlier?”

“Oh, that?” The girl giggled again; the sound lifted Fey’s spirits. “Don’t worry about it. We’re not usually allowed to take books from the towers, but I happen to be an exception.” In a flash, she reached down and snatched Fey’s Treaty from her belt. “You’re a newcomer, eh? I wondered why I didn’t recognize you. That means you don’t know who I am.
